Elm - Ulmus procera Other names are Red Elm, English or Common Elm. In many cases Elm would attain sizes of 130ft or more in height and up to 4ft in diameter. It is of coarse grain but can have beautiful figure. Often Elm is used for coffin boards. Owing to its durability under water Elm is suitable for wharf construction, piles etc. With the advent of Dutch elm disease it is becoming increasingly scarce. Elm turns and finishes well.
Elm Wych or Wych Elm - Ulmus glabra Huds The heartwood of Wych Elm is usually paler in colour than English Elm, and often has a greenish tint. Generally it is considered better quality than the English Elms, having straighter grain and finer textured. Wych Elm is used mostly for the same purposes as English, Attractive timber for turning.
