Plane or London Plane - Platanus acerifolia Other names include London Plane or Lacewood. The later name is used for stock cut on the quarter (quarter sawn). Plane often grows over 100ft in height with a diameter of 3 to 4 ft. Plane is not grown as a forest timber in Britain, but has been widely planted in London and other big cities because it can withstand a smoky atmosphere. Plane is mainly used in this country for decorative work, inlaying, turnery etc. Plane is one of the most beautiful of home grown woods. It cuts well for turnery and will take a fine finish
